2 HEAT RELEASE RATE and CALORIC CONTENT
All materials for which flammability, smoke emissions and toxicity reports will be submitted shall be tested as per ASTM E 1354 or the combined equivalent ISO 5660 and ISO 1716 to determine their caloric content (btu/lb) and heat release rate (kW/m2 or Btu/hr*m2). The tests will be performed at a heat input of 50 kW/m2. There are no performance criteria for this test. 50 kW/m2 is the typical North American heat input value to perform the ASTM E 1354 tests, providing a worse case evaluation of the materials’ heat output. The heat release rate as given at 180 seconds in the test will be the value used.
All materials for which flammability and smoke emissions reports will be submitted shall be tested for smoke toxicit.The maximum toxic gas release limits are:
Carbon Monoxide (CO) 3,500 ppm
Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) 200 ppm
Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) 100 ppm
Hydrogen Chloride (HCL) 500 ppm
Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN) 150 ppm
Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) 100 ppm
The smoke toxicity tests may be performed in conjunction with the smoke emission tests using the NBS smoke chamber to collect the smoke, as required in the ASTM E 662 test procedure. The smoke toxicity testing protocole shall be BSS 7239.
